A HAPPY CHEMICAL BOOST .......

Whichever happy chemicals you decide you need more of, try simple tips for boosting them.......

  1. OXYTOCIN - is the 'bonding' chemical.  If your trust has been betrayed, you'll hold back.  Building the feelings of belonging is generated by 'oxytocin'
  • Being trustworthy - It's a two street if others feel they can trust you, you are more likely to trust them
  • Time - trust takes time to build, so you could get a pet that will be loyal, join a group or workshop where you feel you will not be judged, or play a sport where you can share the good and bad as a team
  • Touch - take time to treat yourself to a massage or apply body lotion or face cream can also make a difference to feelings of wellbeing.  As touch stimulates oxytocin, be more "cuddly" with your partner, friends and family too.
  • Be aware - take note of your "trust-domoter" with strangers rather than staying with who you know, in other words expand your comfort zone
2.  EUPHORIA AND DETERMINATION:
ENDORPHINS

  • Endorphins is natures's pain relief - it's stimulated by pain.  It evolved for survival;  we need it switch on and off so we don't end up walking on a broken leg.
  • Laugh - a good laugh will release endorphins and remove fear.
  • Cry -  Holding back tears can build up tension - having a good cry is a physical relief from tension - to let go
  • Exercise - move around, dance, go gardening, housework, gym or a brisk walk while get those endorphins going
  • Stretch - It's a great way to boost circulation.  Try a yoga class.
3. MOTIVATION:
DOPAMINE:

Dopamine helps us release the energy we need to get the rewards we want.  In survival terms this usually means food and water, but we can benefit from it is other ways
  • Baby steps - break tasks or goals down into small manageable chunks it will feel more do-able then, your brain will reward with dopamine each time, helping you achieve your goal
  • Reward yourself - Acknowledge your achievements and give yourself little rewards along the way to keep the momentum
4. SAFETY AND RESPECT
SERATONIN

Seratonin is realised when we it sees its bigger or stronger than another; having the advantage creates a feeling of safety.  Social recognition can be fleeting and unpredictable, but you can find good routes to self repsect

  • Enjoy where you are -  It is not always best to be in the driving seat, so know when to be happy and when to be the passenger.  Status goes up and down
  • Notice your influence - you can see when people have taken your lead.  Don't expect credit, just take the time to appreciate your good efforts on others.
  • Surrender control - Control can lead to frustration. Choose one "control" habit you have and try to let it go.  So no checking the weather or looking at the clock
  • Take pride - Make up your mind to say "look what I have done" without being too ties up with the reaction - accept that it may not always be the one you want.

Circadian Rhythms - energy management

Shift work and your health Not only can shift work make it hard to stick to a healthy diet or regular sleep patterns, but it can also play havoc with your health. Working when you would normally be asleep can disturb your body’s natural sleep wake cycle, otherwise known as the circadian rhythm. Exposure to light at night can also alter the balance of hormones in your body, suppressing melatonin and triggering an increase in reproductive hormones. Research has emerged that shows there may be a connection between shift work and an increased risk of a number of illnesses affecting men.
The research A study that was reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology examined the health effects of shift work on more than 3000 men aged 35 – 70 years. The research uncovered a possible association between night work and a range of illnesses affecting men. This included a higher risk of illness in sites such as the lungs, prostate, colon, bladder and pancreas compared to a control group of men who never worked at night. The researchers discovered a significantly increased risk of illness in the prostate and colon of men, irrespective of the duration or timing of night work. They also speculated the link between illness and night work may come from a range of factors, such as disturbed sleep, lifestyle (diet, physical activity, or weight), changes in vitamin D exposure, and hormonal imbalances.
Better health for shift workers The following strategies may help to counteract the harmful effects of shift work on your health, while also working to improve your wellbeing.

  • Nourish your body – Eat a diet low in processed foods, and rich in vegetables, fruits, seafood, legumes and whole grains. This will maximise your intake of antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. You may also benefit from a multi vitamin to help ensure your basic nutritional needs are met.
  • Improve your sleeping environment – Sleep can be difficult for shift workers, so it’s important to have a room that provides a supportive environment. Firstly, make sure your room is very dark. Invest in thick window coverings to prevent sunlight interfering with your body's internal clock when you sleep during the day. Silence is also important, so take the phone off the hook or invest in some quality earplugs.
  • Get active – Physical activity may increase your alertness on the job, and can also help to improve your sleep habits. Other benefits that are important for shift workers include improved heart health, weight control and stress management. Consider your family commitments, sleeping patterns and shift times, and decide if exercise will best fit into your day before, during your break, or after work
  • Get outdoors – Spending some time outdoors in the day will expose your retina to sunlight, and your skin to vitamin D. This may help to improve your sleep cycle, and your health. Suggestions to make the most of your time outdoors could include gardening, brisk walking, yoga and Tai Chi.
  • Visit your doctor – Develop a good relationship with your doctor, and inform them you are a shift worker. They can monitor your health over time, and keep you informed of the best lifestyle strategies to counteract the harmful effects of shift work.Circadian Rhythms

Motion of seasons

Sometimes I wonder about this incredible thing called nature.  Every year I have such a battle with the changing of the seasons as something inside me pulls like the tide of the ocean to change something and step up a gear.  It is always around April and October.  It's time to move!  Boy have I been waiting for this time.  The frustration, indecision, uncertainty, fear, anger, sadness has all come to an end.  It got so bad at one point it felt constant.  It is all about energy but I have found with all this wireless technology over the past 5 years it takes that much more to move the energy.

Or is this me just getting old and as they say the older you get the harder it gets to change.  Well I don't agree.  I believe and always have that if you want something bad enough and you believe you can then you will.  The only thing that stands in the way is allowing yourself out of choice to think a certain way, behave a certain way and then ultimately you have the consequences to deal with.

The difference is when we are young we don't spend enough time thinking about the consequences and when we get older we spend too much time thinking of the consequences.
It all boils down to this thing called nature and the human brain.  One half is emotional and the other logical.  We all know woman is more dominate in the emotional side and men the practical side and new buzz word is "emotional intelligence"

It’s a bit like a war as if there is no balance the result is chaos!  Well I had a man explain this to me very simply in a whole 10 minutes.  He said "your thoughts affect your feelings" your brain does not know that what you think is true of not.  Conscious and un conscious brain.  If you tell yourself something enough times eventually you believe it, it becomes your reality and that affects the way we feel.

Fresh start with time management for 2013

Are you feeling motivated for 2013?
Have you thought about the changes you want to make for 2013?
Are you wanting to feel more energised and have more time in 2013?

The most common thing my clients say to me is "I don't have enough time....." and I feel exhausted......then I ask, why?

"Oh it's my boss, or the weather, or the kids, or my partner and most of all I just have to much work to do"  Can you relate?

Well I am sorry to break the news but it is all up to you to manage your time and energy.

Are you late to meetings, classes, appointments, dates or work?
Are you typically way behind in your studying, work or other important areas of your life?
Do you often not meet important deadline?
Do you perpetually feel overwhelmed by how much you have to do and how soon you have to do it?
Is your social life suffering?
Do you always get too little sleep, and too much illness?
Do you do just one thing until it's done, while you get behind in everything else?
Do you flit from one task to another exact when you're suppose to, never really committing to anything or getting anything done?

Planning is the key, yes you have to set TIME aside to PLAN to manage your time.

Estimate how long it will take you to......

  • go to a meeting and return
  • make a call
  • go to a class
  1. Now: write down your estimate
  2. Time it, and see
  3. Avoid over-commitment - to work, your career and personal life by accepting too many irresponsibles, helping too many people
  4. Do one thing at the time - Don't (try to) do more than one thing at once..driving and....."When standing, stand!
Your most valuable Time Management tools:

  1. Phone? Email? - Use emails or calls rather than meetings
  2. Phone, email can backfire: slave to the Blackberry
  3. Computer software: Outlook(full version, iCal, Google, use email rather than calls
